Most, like Rand, have attempted to shoehorn them into a monism, which has usually made matters worse rather than better. Popper, born troublemaker as he was, went the other way, and proposed a trialism - that the universe could be divided into 3 sub-"worlds".

World 1 - Objective, physical. The world of stars, rocks, and atoms.
World 2 - Subjective, non-physical. The world of consciousness, of human emotions and feelings
World 3 - Objective, non-physical. The world of mathematical systems, of literature, art, laws, institutions and other human inventions.

These 'worlds' emerged out of each other as unintended consequences, and unlike Plato, the world of abstract ideas is the product of human consciousness (W2) interacting with the physical world (W1) and does not precede it.

I consider Popper's '3 Worlds' to be one of the most original and interesting metaphysical conjectures ever, and it deserves to be better known.Daniel Barneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06359277853862225286noreply@blogger.com
